Angelo State Center Director Cheryl McGaughey

I have been the Director for the Center of Economic Education at Angelo State University since 1997 and an instructor of Finance at ASU since 1984. In my capacity as center director, I conduct Economic and Personal Finance workshops throughout central West Texas. Many of my trainings are in conjunction with Region XV ESC, which covers 15 counties and a geographic area stretching from Del Rio to San Angelo and from Brownwood to Big Lake. I have also conducted trainings for the Texas Council on Economic Education at a number of state-wide conferences.

Along with my workshops and outreach to area teachers, I have written a number of Economic and Personal Finance lessons for classroom use. I have published 13 online lessons on the EconEdLink for the Council on Economic Education. These lessons range in grade level from kindergarten to 12th grade. Some of the titles and topics include Segway to the Future (entrepreneurship), From Tires to Toothpicks (price elasticity), U.S. Farmers and the Cuban Embargo (trade barriers), From Butterflies to Buffaloes (eco-tourism and natural resources), It Pays to Stay in School (incentive and human capital), and Blowing in the Wind (wind energy and technological change). These lessons are free for teachers and incorporate online activities to teach Economic concepts.

In addition to my teaching experience, I have worked at a number of financial institutions as a credit and financial analyst. Currently, I volunteer at a local credit union, where I am chairman of the board of directors. My workshops and trainings, along with the Finance classes I teach, are greatly enhanced by my actual work experience and involvement in the financial services industry.

I have a BBA degree in Management from Stephen F. Austin State University and an MBA in Finance from the University of Mississippi. In addition to my years at Angelo State, I have also taught at Nicholls State University in Louisiana as well as Stephen F. Austin State University and Sul Ross State University in Texas.
